Assistant MRI Technologist Job Description
The Assistant MRI Technologist provides support to the MRI Technologist in delivering safe, efficient and high-quality imaging services. This role is responsible for patient preparation, MRI safety screening, workflow coordination and maintaining a clean, organized imaging environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for MRI procedures, including explaining the exam process and addressing questions or concerns
- Perform and document MRI safety screenings in accordance with established protocols
- Assist patients with positioning and comfort before and after imaging procedures
- Support the MRI technologist with room setup coil selection and general workflow
- Monitor patients during pre and post procedure phases and report any issues to the technologist
- Ensure efficient patient throughput by preparing the next patient in advance
- Coordinate with front office and clinical staff to minimize delays and gaps
- Maintain smooth patient flow throughout the day
- Ensure MRI suite compliance with safety standards including proper screening of all individuals entering restricted zones
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the MRI room and equipment
- Stock supplies and linens to avoid workflow interruptions
- Assist with patient scheduling coordination and documentation as directed
- Verify patient identification and exam orders prior to procedures
- Report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns promptly
- Assist with administrative tasks such as order verification and documentation
- Support front office with scheduling, maintaining cleanliness and day to day tasks
- Other duties as assigned
Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to MRI safety standards and facility policies at all times
- Follow guidelines established by the inter societal accreditation Commission (IAC)
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations
- Participate in safety drills and ongoing training as required
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associates degree preferred
- Completion of a healthcare related training program preferred
Experience
- Prior experience in a healthcare or imaging setting preferred
Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or obtained within a specified time frame
- Progress toward certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to provide compassionate patient care
- Attention to detail and commitment to safety protocols
- Ability to multitask and maintain efficiency in a fast-paced environment
- Team oriented with a proactive, “jump in and help” mindset
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology

Patient Throughput Support
- Assist in achieving daily MRI volume targets
On Time Starts
- Help maintain schedule adherence (minimal delays between patients)
Room Turnover Efficiency
- Target: less than 5 to 7 minutes between patients
MRI Safety Compliance
- 100% completion and accuracy of safety screenings
Patient Experience
- Positive patient feedback and satisfaction scores
Team Contribution
- Willingness to assist across roles to maintain flow
