What Is an Open MRI?
An open MRI uses the same magnetic resonance technology as a traditional MRI to produce detailed images of your organs, bones, muscles, and soft tissues. The key difference is the design. Instead of sliding into a narrow, enclosed tube, you lie on a table positioned between two flat magnetic surfaces with open space on all sides.
This open design was created specifically for patients who struggle with traditional MRI machines. If you have ever been told you need an MRI but felt anxious about being in a tight, enclosed space, an open MRI offers the same diagnostic value in a setting that feels far less restrictive.
At Marion Open MRI, we use the Hitachi AIRIS Elite, a proven open MRI system with an asymmetric two-post architecture that maximizes the open space around you. It supports advanced imaging sequences including fat saturation, parallel imaging, and MR angiography, giving your physician the high-resolution images they need for an accurate diagnosis.

Affordable MRI in Marion, Indiana
We believe that the cost of an MRI should never prevent you from getting the care your doctor has recommended. At Marion Open MRI, we are committed to keeping imaging accessible and affordable.
How we keep MRI costs low:
- We are an independent imaging center, not a hospital. That means no facility fees added to your bill. Facility fees alone can add hundreds or even thousands of dollars to an MRI at a hospital-based imaging center.
We work directly with most major insurance providers and will verify your benefits before your appointment, so there are no surprises.
For self-pay and uninsured patients, we offer competitive cash-pay pricing that is significantly below hospital rates.
We also offer payment plans for patients who need financial flexibility.
If your doctor has ordered an MRI and you are concerned about cost, call us at (765) 662-0100. Our front desk team will walk you through your options and help you understand exactly what your exam will cost before you schedule.
What to Expect During Your Open MRI
Before your appointment:
Your doctor will provide a referral or prescription for the MRI exam. When you call to schedule, our team will verify your insurance (if applicable) and let you know what to bring. If you have any implanted medical
devices such as a pacemaker or neurostimulator, let us know when scheduling so we can confirm MRIcompatibility before your visit.
When you arrive:
You will be greeted by our front desk team and asked to complete a brief medical history and safety screening form. You will change into MRI-safe clothing (a secure locker is provided for your belongings). If you have body piercings, you may be asked to remove them as metal can heat during the scan.
During the exam:
You will lie comfortably on the open MRI table. There is no tube or enclosure around you. A family member or friend is welcome to stay in the room for support. Your technologist will be in an adjacent room
and will communicate with you through an intercom throughout the entire scan. The exam is completely painless. Most scans take between 30 and 60 minutes.
After the exam:
You can resume all normal activities immediately. Your images will be reviewed by a radiologist and the report will be sent to your referring physician, typically within a short turnaround window.
If you take medication to relax before your exam, please arrange for someone to drive you home.
